Features of psychoanalytic education

Psychoanalysis is a comprehensive training that includes theoretical psychoanalytic education, psychoanalytic training (personal analysis), as well as supervisory support for the beginning of practical psychotherapeutic activity. Such training is always based on the experience that is already available, on the fact that there is already higher education.

Psychoanalysis is not a university profession, not a profession that can be taught based on pre-given, objective knowledge transmitted in stable concepts and definitions. The future psychoanalyst does not have the opportunity to simply learn concepts and their definitions, as is the case with the transmission of knowledge in a classical university discipline.

As a result of special training, we obtain insights that allow us to understand a given situation. Special training makes it possible to be prepared for any eventuality. And here we encounter the first impossibility, because a case for a case is a priori impossible to be unpredictable.

But how does a psychoanalyst acquire his knowledge? One of Freud’s key formulas on this subject is: psychoanalysis cannot be taught, it can only be experienced. It is not learned, it is experienced in personal analysis.

A psychoanalyst can conduct his work thanks to a special ethical position, based on professional principles. This gives him the opportunity to use knowledge, allows him to turn to the subjective world of another person.

How to become a psychoanalyst

However, psychoanalysis is a profession, except for the impossible one. Paradoxically, Freud affirms psychoanalysis as a profession, pointing out its impossibility as such. Psychoanalysis is an almost unconsciously possible profession, because the unconscious does not know the particle “no”. According to the logic of the removal of negation, the impossible is possible. However, not in the generally accepted sense of this very “possibility”.

You can get a psychoanalytic education only on the basis of an existing higher education. And it does not necessarily have to be a psychological education. Doctors and philosophers, anthropologists and marketers, financiers and lawyers, etc. come to study psychoanalysis. The new Law of Ukraine “On the Mental Health Care System in Ukraine” requires future specialists to undergo comprehensive training within the framework of certified programs. What is comprehensive training and where can you get it?

EDUCATION

First of all, a future specialist must receive high-quality EDUCATION in one of the recognized methods. We provide education in one of these recognized methods of psychotherapy – PSYCHOANALYSIS (by Order of the Ministry of Health of Ukraine No. 2118 dated 13.12.2023, psychoanalytic therapy was recognized as a method of psychotherapy with proven effectiveness).

The MIGP educational program fully complies with the requirements of the legislation and is accredited by the European Confederation of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapies (https://ecpp.ngo/members-list/institutes/), which guarantees the provision of high-quality education according to European standards.

The course lasts 2.5 years (2100 academic hours) and includes lectures on the history, theory, methodology and practice of classical psychoanalysis, basic modern psychoanalytic approaches, as well as practical training (seminars, colloquiums, group classes). The institute’s teachers are leading specialists from Ukraine, France, Italy, Argentina and other countries.

PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE

Before practicing on others, a specialist must gain their own PRACTICAL EXPERIENCE.

In accordance with the world system of training specialists in the field of psychoanalysis, which has already traditionally developed, within the framework of the UAP, the professional training of a specialist includes theoretical education and professional psychoanalytic training, which distinguishes training analysis and psychoanalytically oriented practice under the systematic control of a supervisor (according to paragraph A.1. of the UAP Regulations on Training Analysis).

It should be emphasized that training analysis is the main component and a mandatory and integral part of the professional training of specialists in the field of psychoanalysis (according to paragraph A.2. of the Regulations on Training Analysis of the UAP).

Provided that the National Standard for Training Analysis is met or the analysis is continued and at least 50% completed (according to clause B.7.2. Regulations on Training Analysis of the UAP), being a member of the UAP, the candidate may begin his own psychoanalytically oriented practice under the condition of constant supervisory support (according to clause B.1. Regulations on Training Analysis of the UAP). The candidate who has started practice receives the status of a trainee within the UAP (according to clause B.3. Regulations on Training Analysis of the UAP).

CERTIFICATION

After completing the training, the future specialist should have the opportunity to start practicing under the guidance of certified specialists. This opportunity is provided by the All-Ukrainian public organization “Ukrainian Association of Psychoanalysis”, of which the International Institute of Depth Psychology is a collective member. The association was founded in 2002 and is a branch organization (national representative) of the European Confederation of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapies (Vienna, Austria), https://ecpp.ngo/members-list/branches, where it is also possible to undergo the procedure of international certification.

The Association ensures that each specialist is constantly developing, therefore, various educational projects aimed at improving their qualifications are systematically organized. In addition, the UAP has supervision and interview groups that help specialists in their daily work. The UAP also offers projects that help novice specialists “enter” the profession.
